Mordernization
During the last years of the Choson Dynasty.
when western culture was imported and imperialistic forces invaded,
Enlightenment thought adopted the spirit of Practical Learning,
and by adopting western institutions and scientific technology
strived to modernize the country. The Enlightenment Party, in
leading the Kabo reforms attempted to modernize and strengthen
the countries, but in the end they were unable to defeat the
foreign powers, allowing the Japanese imperialists to rob us
of our sovereignty.
Christianity entered the country in this same
period. Christianity emphasized the practice of love and devoted
itself to the modernization of the country by building many
schools and hospitals. The humanism evident in Protestantism
was so similar to our own traditional humanism that the religion
rapidly spread throughout the Country.
The modern western thoughts, which were characterized
as rationalism and humanism based on freedom in contrast with
our traditional ideals, altered our value and life patterns
drastically. We have managed to accommodate western ideals with
our traditional thoughts and achieved the present status of
development in democracy and economy |
